The Scala dei Turchi is a candid and extensive chalky cliff overlooking the sea. Over the centuries, the wind, waves and rain have given it the shape of a magnificent, natural staircase where a series of broad steps, furrows and terraces descend to the terse waters below. The name derives from folklore legend claiming that in the cliffs of the adjacent bays, Muslim ships could hide and pirates could easily climb the cliffs to raid the surrounding countryside.
