The oldest wooden cross in the world was found in Casteltermini. Every fourth Sunday in May, a festival celebrates the discovery of the cross which dates back to 70 A.D.
The celebrations feature original war dances of groups in costume and a parade of horses. The festival has been celebrated for more than three centuries and re-enacts the history of the confrontation between the Muslim Arabs, dispossessed by the Christian Normans, who arrived in Sicily in the 11th Century. To the rhythm of loud drums the return of Christianity to the island is celebrated.
